Call Bets or Announced Bets

If you have seen roulette played you know that it is a very exciting and energetic game. You can quietly place your chips in the spaces you choose to bet, but that is not the only way to place a bet. There are some more boisterous ways that are also allowed when placing bets in the game of roulette. The call bet and the announced bet are two ways that you will encounter in your casino experience.

The call bet is made simply by saying, or "calling out" your bet before the ball stops spinning. There is no money placed on the table to make this bet, it is taken on faith. In the United States and United Kingdom, called bets are considered "betting on credit" and that is not allowed.

Something similar is an announced bet. The announced bet is also said out loud to the dealer, but the money to cover the bet is placed on the table before the ball has finished its spin. There are several types of these announced bets that are popular, especially in European roulette.

"Voisins du zero", is French for the "neighbors of zero". If you look at the European roulette wheel, there are 17 numbers between the 22 and 25 with the 0 in the middle. To bet on voisins du zero, play 2 chips (or multiples of two) on portions of the section.

Another section of the wheel that is popularly bet on is the "Jeu zero" in French, "zero spiel" in German, or zero game in English. This is bet on the numbers closest to zero in European roulette. The numbers in this series are: 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, and 15. To play on the jeu zero series, use four chips, or multiples of four on portions of the section.

A "tier", or "the third", refers to the 12 numbers on the opposite side of the wheel from the zero and "voisins". The numbers on the European wheel are from 27 to 33, and as the name states, covers one third of the wheel. To place a bet on the tier, use six chips, or multiples of six.

In between the "voisins du zero" section and "tier" there are two small slices on either side of the wheel. These "orphelins", or orphans, are four numbers in each slice, for a total of eight orphans. Use five chips, or multiples of five to place your bet.

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list of possible announced or called bet you can find in the casino. These are the most popular bets played.
